Drowning is the leading cause of accidental death for children under 5 (swimforlife.org) so, getting JR into the water as soon as possible was a big priority for us. Johnny worked as a swim instructor at his uncle’s swim school, Blue Buoy in Tustin, CA, and we knew that was where we would take our little one once he was ready for lessons.
We are so lucky to be able to have a private swim lessons with our Uncle Johnny because he typically has a wait list a mile long. JR did amazing during his first lesson, he slipped into the water with a smile on his face, splashed and floated around while getting used to the pool. Then, it was time for him to go under for the first time. Learning how to take a breath before going under water is an important aspect of water safety. When I saw JR take a big breath and then hold it before going under, I was so proud! He popped back up, opened his big eyes and started smiling.
After owning a swim school and teaching water safety to thousands of people our uncle, Johnny Johnson, started The Safer 3 Water Safety Foundation, which promotes 3 key aspects of drowning prevention.
Safer Water means identifying where the risks are with any body of water (bathtubs, pools, spas, lakes, rivers or oceans) and learning how to reduce those risks. For example installing barriers such as isolation fencing around a backyard pool would reduce the risk of unauthorized access to the pool by young children.
Safer Kids covers the behaviors necessary for both kids and parents to promote water safety. These water safety tips include constant responsible supervision by adults, along with swimming skills attained through ongoing qualified instruction for kids.
Safer Response overviews emergency response techniques and emergency action plans as a path to water safety. Learning cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and first aid, as well as having a phone by the pool at all times, are just a few of the water safety tips covered here.
You can learn more about water safety and by visiting the foundations website swimforlife.org. A gift of any size would help promote their message to children, caregivers and communities to make neighborhoods safer!
