Each Summer, my family looks forward to Grand Performances in California Plaza. This year, our favorite has been the Sunday afternoon Peter and the Wolf series. Each week a different take on the classic makes it interesting and engaging for children of all ages.
Peter y la Loba
Last Sunday, Lucky Diaz and the Funky Family Band put a California-Pop, Surf-Punk twist on the story. Peter y la Loba shared the story in an interactive way by having the cast of characters dance through the audience.
The story begins with Peter wanting to travel past the gate of his abuelita’s garden to find the paletas man. After he disobeys and leaves, all of his animal friends get loose. The crazy duck, the Twitter bird and the cool cat, befriend the sweet wolf. The hunters don’t realize all of the animals are friends when they start chasing “la loba”. After the hunters see that everyone gets along, they break out in a cool hip hop sing along.
They finished the performance with an adorable dance party with all of the kids jumping around, waving their arms in the air.
Getting There & Parking
California Plaza is located at 300 S. Grand Ave. Parking is available for $8 (cash only), in a secure underground structure. You will need to enter the parking garage on Olive St., between 4th and 1st.
Taking the Metro is another great option. Both the red and purple lines exit at the Pershing Square station. Take the north escalator towards 4th and Hill then, walk up the hill to the escalator at 4th and Olive.
After the performance, take time to discover a few nearby attractions to get the most out of your trip to Downtown LA.
Grand Ave. is dubbed “Museum Row” so, be sure to take a stroll to see The Broad, MOCA, Walt Disney Concert Hall and The Dorothy Chandler Pavillion.
The newly renovated Angel’s Flight will be located at the top of California Plaza. It is still under construction and isn’t open for rides but, the fresh paint will be an awesome Instagram post.
If you are hungry, take the stairs that run along Angel’s Flight and visit Grand Central Market for dinner. There are so many delicious options. I would suggest getting a few plates from Horse Thief BBQ to share while sitting on the open air patio.
Don’t Miss Next Week’s Final Preformance
Next Sunday, August 20, is the final performance in the series and will feature Edicion Latinx with a Spanglish version of Peter and the Wolf. Performances start at 3:30 pm and 4:00 pm, with family friendly activities.
