Downtown Los Angeles is a hot spot for amazing restaurants but, many are not exactly kid-friendly. Our favorite place to eat as a family in Downtown Los Angeles is Grand Central Market. There so many different options that everyone will be sure to find something that they love.
Getting to Grand Central Market is quite easy considering it is directly across the street from the Pershing Square Metro Station. Also, the famous red double decker Sightseeing bus stops here as well, so it is an easy lunch spot for tourists. If you do drive, there is a paid parking garage attached to the market, metered street parking (be careful of certain no parking times during rush hour) and also open air parking lots just a few blocks away. There is an information booth near the Hill St. entrance and a small wheelchair lift directly next to the booth to help get down to the lower level of the market.
There are so many delicious options and I try to eat at a different vendor each time I visit. Grand Central market is amazing because each person can get something different and then you can all share smorgasbord style or just hoard your yumminess all to yourself (no judging!).
My Favorite Vendors
I love fish and there quite a few options no matter what you are craving. Wexler’s Deli has the best Bagels & Lox. It comes with two pickle spears and a side of potato salad or cole slaw (I enjoy the potato salad) and it is very filling. Another option for pesacatarians is La Tostaderia. Their fresh ceviche is mouth watering – I’m literally salivating just thinking about squeezing fresh lime over the huge pieces of shrimp. A new stall, Prawn, also looks quite good but, I haven’t tried it yet.
While I was pregnant, I craved the lorroco pupusias from Sarita’s Pupuseria and would try to pace myself and only sneak over there once in a while. You might recognize this vendor from La La Land!
Berlin Currywurst is another great option if you have a big hunger. Their sandwiches are very hearty and if you add a side of fries you will be full until dinnertime.
If you arrive early in the day and are in the mood for breakfast but, don’t want to wait in the massive Egg Slut line then, you HAVE to get the breakfast sandwich from Sari Sari Store. OMG it is sooooo freaking good. The bread, the sausage patty, the pickled veggies – it all melds together with a perfectly cooked egg. It is a must try. Then. order a Halo Halo for dessert. It is so fruity and refreshing on a hot, Summer day.
Kid Friendly Food
JR usually just shares my meal with me but, there are a few items he doesn’t care for so, I have a few go-tos that I know he will love.
Olio’s Wood Fired Pizza is a great family favorite for picky eaters. The pizzas are fair in size and can feed small 2-3 kids or 1 kid and 1 adult (if the adult isn’t starving haha).
Valerie is another great option for kids. Their potato and bacon handles are hearty and comforting, plus can be hand held making it easy to eat on the go.
PBJ.LA is one of the latest vendors to open in Grand Central Market and what kid doesn’t love a peanut butter and jelly sandwich?! They have a traditional but, also take the flavors to an elevated state with artisanal nut butters and jams. Warning steer clear of the espresso peanut butter options!
On top of delicious food there are many fun, family friendly events each week at Grand Central Market. Join in on the fun during Game Night every Thursday evening. There are plenty of fun games set up on the Hill St. platform such as Jenga, corn hole, card games and scrabble for everyone to share and enjoy.
Fridays offer an eclectic mix of DJs spinning a wide range of music and Sundays offer Jazz Nights with live musicians entertaining the dinner crowd.
Have you visited Grand Central Market? What is your favorite vendor and meal? I’d love to hear your top picks so leave me a comment with all of your recommendations!
